What do you think about adoption?

At one time, people said adoption meant you were giving up your baby. Adoption isn’t giving up. It’s an opportunity to place your child in a loving home with a family who can support them.

Is adoption right for you?

Only you know what brought you to this time. You could be facing circumstances in your life that make it impossible to raise this child, and that’s ok. We want you to know that your experiences in life will never be judged or questioned. Life is challenging and you deserve to understand all the options available for your unplanned pregnancy.

The Adoption process

Adoption is a difficult choice for any woman to make. It means you are choosing to think about your child’s future first. Choosing to place your child in the arms of another family is the greatest act of love any mother could do.

Your first step is to choose a registered adoption agency or adoption social worker whether private or public. At no time can anyone ask you to pay money to place your child for adoption. All services should be completely free.

Birth parents who decide to place their child for adoption can only sign a consent to adoption after the baby is born. Both parents then have 60 days in which they can change their minds.  As a result, the child is kept in a place of safety until that period ends.

Birth parents may specify which adoptive parents they would prefer for their child. If the biological father is unknown or isn’t present, a social worker will try to trace him to obtain consent or allow him the opportunity to raise his child. If he does not come forward in the specified 90-day period, the adoption can proceed without his consent.

Types of adoptions

There are two main types of adoptions to choose from.

Disclosed/open adoption

The details and identity of the adoptive parents are disclosed to the biological parent/s and visa versa. There can be open communication between the two.

Non-disclosed or closed adoption

There is no disclosure of identity and the personal details of the biological parent/s are not known to the adoptive parents. There is no contact or communication between the parties.
